History of La Colombe d’Or
La Colombe d’Or Hotel rose from a small café with a dancing zone, which was open by a local citizen. His name was Paul Roux, and he opened this place in 1920, even before the war. Paul was a farmer, and he really liked art. That’s why he decided to ‘lure’ poor artists, who visited French Riviera in search of the inspiration.
Artist paid for their stay with their paintings, and Paul managed to create his own gallery. Thanks to his hobby and savvy, his descendants have a lot of money in their pockets.
Such famous artists as Bonnard, Matisse, Modigliani, and Chagall created their paintings here. Chagall really liked Saint-Paul-de-Vence and spent his last days here. His grave can be found in the local cemetery.
During the 40’s Saint-Paul-de-Vence was frequently visited by famous actors. Jacques Prévert, who was a friend of Paul Roux, started this tradition. La Colombe d’Or was visited by Lino Ventura and Serge Reggiani. Yves Montand and Simona Signore met each other and had their wedding here. Their wedding photos can be found at the entrance. Arielle Dombasle and Bernard-Henri Levy decided to do the same and had their wedding in La Colombe d’Or too.
The list of the famous people, who came to La Colombe d’Or Hotel, is really long. It was visited by Charlie Chaplin, Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren, Alain Delon, Jean-Paul Belmondo… While the garden and the terrace of La Colombe d`Or can be seen in numerous French movies.
How to get here?
In case if you book a room, you will be met at the airport or the train station. There’s bus #400 that connects Saint-Paul-de-Vence and Nice on a daily basis. Furthermore, visiting this ancient city is a part of the majority of excursion tours in French Riviera. In case if you have a car, you can reach Nice in 30 minutes, and Cannes in 45 minutes.
