Protaras is a small resort town in the south-east of Cyprus, located in the Fig Tree Cove, which is not far from Ayia Napa.
Only 50 years ago, just fig trees grew at the area of Protaras. Not only the resort infrastructure was missing, but ordinary houses weren’t there as well. Later on, the first signs of development began to appear, in the form of small hotels for lovers of natural recreation; the town has earned a secluded resort reputation.
In recent years, Protaras began growing quickly: some new hotel complexes have appeared; fashionable restaurants and bars have opened; and in terms of the number of tourists, the resort will soon overtake Ayia Napa and Larnaca.
The main advantages of Protaras include gentle and warm sea, and white, soft sand. The picturesque rocky island near the coast ― which can often be seen on tourist postcards and guidebooks ― adds a special charm to the seascapes of Protaras.
Attractions of the Town
The main feature of Protaras is the beautiful nature, but there are also architectural and cultural sights in the town. On the mountain, towering over the town, there is an old Church of Elijah the Prophet. From here, stunning views of the surroundings can be observed; and in the church itself, you can see the ancient frescoes, which are the cultural heritage of Cyprus.
If you are looking for a relaxing beach holiday without any fuss, noisy parties or discos, your best choice is a place called Protaras - a small and cozy resort in the south-east of Cyprus.
If you’d like to better explore the surroundings, consider attending Cape Greco National Forest Park, walking or riding a bike along the scenic path of Aphrodite, and then visiting Liopetri fishing village, where a poet Arthur Rambo used to live and work. You can learn about the history of Cyprus and the town in the Historical Museum that treasures some rare archaeological finds collected in Cyprus.
Protaras is famous for its dancing fountains called Magic Dancing Waters, hypnotizing and fascinating visitors. In a hot season, the fountains work every night, attracting impressive audience.
The resort is ideal for families with children. It’s always sunny over here; the smooth coast impresses with clean sand never getting too hot. And, most importantly, right in the town you can find an aqua park and aquarium, where more than 1000 marine inhabitants are kept, including crocodiles, penguins, and monkeys.
Prоtaras is the most scenic and quiet resort of Cyprus, where there are no noisy discos; thus, you can enjoy sleeping with your windows open. It’s a perfect relaxation place for elderly people and families with little kids.
