Every single year the Louvre is visited by 10 million people. This is one of the biggest and the most frequently visited museums in the world. The number of art objects and exhibits is higher than 300 thousand, but one can witness only 35 thousand during the regular expositions. All other objects are kept in special storages in order to protect them from destruction. One can see such objects only during the constantly changing temporary exhibitions.
The Louvre can be called the keeper of the historical and cultural heritage of the world. Its collection contains objects from the ancient times to the year of 1848. Objects from 19th, 20th and 21st centuries can be found in other museums of France. There are many objects brought from Greece, Egypt, and the Middle East.
Permanent exhibitions of the Louvre
All the objects of art in Louvre are divided into 8 separate categories, which can be seen in different parts of the palace. While entering the museum, the guests will get special maps with the information about the main halls and the best route. Without such a route, one can easily get lost in the museum, and miss something really important.
The first level of the palace offers a vast collection of the objects from the ancient times. One can find exhibits from Ancient Greece, Roman Empire, Ancient Egypt, and Oriental countries. Here one can also find the unique collection of the Etruscan Civilization.
The second and the third floors offer the vast collection of the exhibits from the more modern times. Works of the French masters can be found in the northern part of the castle, while the heritage of other nations is mostly located in the southern one. There’s a separate hall with the objects of the Islamic Art. This collection is considered one of the latest achievements of the Louvre, and it was opened only in 2003.
In the beginning, the Louvre was a fortress. The first buildings were founded in the 12th century. Later it became the royal residence, and now it’s one of the biggest and the most frequently visited museums in the world. The number of art objects and exhibits is higher than 300 thousand, but one can witness only 35 thousand during the regular expositions.
The collection of sculptures and painting is considered one of the most important assets of the Louver. There are more than 6,000 paintings, including works by Leonardo Da Vinci, Rafael, Delacroix, Titian, and other famous artists. The collection of sculptures is also astonishing. It includes antique statues by French and Italian sculptors.
A separate exposition includes the objects of graphical art: drawings, engravings, and books with unique illustrations.
The exhibition of the arts and crafts is also incredibly interesting. Here one can find decorated plates, antique furniture, tapestry, and jewelry.
It’s almost impossible to check all the halls of the Louvre in a day because one needs a lot of time to appreciate each of the unique objects. You need to come here several times in order to have enough time for each of the exhibitions.
The main entrance to the Louvre is located in a glass pyramid. One can buy tickets, and wait in the queue. However, you can buy tickets in advance, and enter the museum through the additional entrance halls. It’s located in the passage to the Royal Palace. Another unpopular and deserted entrance can be found in the neighboring shopping mall.
The history of the Louvre collections
The Louvre was transformed into the museum in 1793. It was used to store the collections of the royal families. At the moment of the opening, the Louvre had only 2,500 exhibits. Their number started to grow when the museum was receiving military trophies and objects found by archeologists. During the wars of Napoleon, the museum received a vast collection from Egypt and the Middle East. At that time it was called the Museum of Napoleon.
Furthermore, many rich people were sending their private collections to the Louvre after their death. For example, the unique collection of Rothschild Family was sent to a museum in the same manner.
Representative offices of the Louvre
The collection of the Louvre is so big that the administration of the museum decided to open additional offices. One of them was opened in the city of Lens in the southern part of France. The second one was opened only at the end of 2017 in Abu Dhabi.
