The creators of the venue, Josep Oller I Roca and Charles-Joseph Zidler were sure that it would be popular, but they couldn’t predict that the cabaret would be known by people all around the world, and new guests will come to see it even in a hundred of years after the opening ceremony.

The first guests were able to enter Moulin Rouge on October 6, 1889. Many tourists came to the city in order to participate in the opening ceremony of Eifel Tower and world fair commemorated to the 100th anniversary of the Bastille Day. The venue was fully booked on the first evening. Guests were amazed at the incredible performance and the exquisite dances of local ladies. Even though the cabaret is located in the Red Light district, and the name means ‘the red mill’, there is nothing inappropriate inside. Despite many rumors, the stage of Moulin Rouge was never used for filthy dances or the striptease.

The cancan  dance was created from quadrille and galop dances, taking their fast movements and increased the tempo. It was invented in the 50’s by Celeste Mogad, but the specific movement of legs and skirts appeared only at the end of the 19th century. At the beginning of its history, the cancan  was a solo dance, while dancers of the UK and the USA offered the traditional cancan.

The current shape of the cancan dance appeared in the 20’s when the choreographer Pierre Sandrini mixed the solo dance with the British dances and added loud shouting and laughing to the performance.
