History of Dubai Monorail creation
The process of the monorail construction started in May 2006 under control of Marubeni Corporation. The first two stations were built during the initial phase: the starting point is Palm Gateway located in Al Sufouh on the mainland, and the final point located near Atlantis hotel. After that, the building company constructed the rail itself and three more stations. According to approximate calculation, the overall price of the project exceeded 1 billion US dollars. The opening ceremony took place on April 30, 2009.
Dubai Monorail was the first monorail in the UAE and the entire Middle East. The overall length of the monorail link is 5.45km, and it’s equipped with the latest Hitachi Monorail system. The carrying capacity of the monorail is 40 thousand passengers per day, and currently, it serves around 1 million people per year.
Dubai Monorail stations
Currently, there are three open stations with air conditioning system:
- Palm Gateway – the first station on the line. It’s located on the 3rd level of Gateway Towers. One can get here by car or by tram from Dubai Marina. One can also take the metro from any part of the city and use the tram. In order to do that you have to take the red line and reach Nakheel station to take the tram. The tram stop is located right opposite the car parking near Gateway Towers.
- Al Ittihad Park – located in the center of the Palm trunk. It provides easy access to the Central Park and Galleria Mall, as well as such residential complexes as Shoreline and Golden Mile.
- Atlantis Aquaventure – located right next to Atlantis hotel, the luxurious shoreline and other important attractions of the island.
In future, the company plans to open Nakheel Mall and The Pointe stations, as well as to build Dubai Internet City station that will connect the monorail with the metro.
Working hours, prices and impressions

A one-way ticket is worth AED 20, while the return one will cost you AED 30. Kids with the height of 110cm and less can participate in the monorail tours for free. One can pay less if they buy a ticket for a ride to a specific station.
The trip takes around 10-12 minutes, while trains depart every 15 minutes. The first train departs from Palm Gateway at 9 AM, while the last – from Atlantis Aquaventure at 10 PM.
