Snake Island is considered one of the best places in the Ukrainian part of the Black Sea outside of Crimea. It has three shipwrecks and a lot of opportunities for underwater hunting.

Snake Island is considered the best diving site in Odessa region, and one of the best places in Ukraine that offer shipwrecks from World War 2, while flora and fauna are more accessible than in other parts of the Odessa, Mykolayiv and Kherson Regions.

Places to see and visit

Here’s the list of the main places for divers – two of them are ships, and one is a submarine, which were sunk near the island in 1941-1945:

  1. Schsh-212 submarine broken into two parts. The frontal part is located in a couple of meters from the main part. All hatches are open, and one can easily enter the submarine. The upper part of the submarine is located at the depth of 26 meters, or 32 meters by the bottom line.
  2. The destroyer ‘Leytenant Zatsarenni’ that has two main parts. They are located at the distance of 4 km. There is a couple of weapons, including the torpedo tube. The frontal part is located at the depth of 36 meters, and the rear part – 27 meters.
  3. Unknown tanker called 1907 that has the length of 100 meters. There’s a lot of nets around it, and the depth of this ship is 27 meters.

Right next to the shipwrecks and the island one can find a huge amount of fishes (6 species are endangered) and 6 species of crabs (4 of them are endangered).

One can perform underwater hunting, but only in the case when endangered species are not affected. The depth is increasing sharply, and one can easily reach the depth of 20-25 meters.

One can also collect shells and mussels right near the island in order to cook them in the evening.

Diving conditions

The best time for diving near Snake Island is the period of July and August. The temperature of the water depends on the current and can vary from 19 to 28°С.

When there are no waves, the water is clear and the visibility is around 8-9 meters. However, it’s impossible to predict the quality of the water because it may change even in one hour.

The price of a 3-day session with diving and food is $350 per person. It includes the price of the transfer from Vilkovo (5 hours), a visit to the sauna, and a tour to the historical museum of the unique city on Snake Island. The price doesn’t include the rental fees (usually, divers bring their own equipment), accommodation on the island, and the transportation from Odessa to Vilkovo (3 hours).

The minimum required level is AOWD. Freedivers are also allowed to dive here.

One can book a tour to the island in any of the diving clubs in Odessa or Kyiv. It’s impossible to reach the island on your own due to legal requirements and customs formalities.
