Mediterranean Titanic: diving to the sunk Zenobia ferry
Swedish ferry Zenobia that sunk near Larnaka is called the Mediterranean Titanic. This giant ship had a lot of goods and cargo on it, but it wasn’t able to make even the first trip. At the same time, the entire crew managed to survive. The ferry is included in the TOP-10 list of the wrecked ships in the world and attracts professional divers from all over the world.
The biggest and the most modern ferry
Zenobia was created by a Swedish chip building company. It was a giant cargo ferry, which was equipped with the most modern and advanced machines of that time. It had the length of 127 meters and the width of 28. Before the first trip, the ferry was loaded with 108 trucks having 40 tons of cargo in each of them.
It was impossible to save the cargo during the catastrophe, and the ferry sunk with all those products and goods onboard. Trucks can still be found under the water, carrying construction materials, army stuff, LEGO blocks and many other things. Divers are able to swim through the ferry, checking all the compartments of it.
In the year 1980, the ship was planned to make its first trip from Greece to Syria, but it wasn’t able to reach the destination. Soon after leaving the bay, Zenobia faced first problems. The central computer had errors, which resulted in an imbalance of the ship, and it started to incline to the left side. Mechanics managed to solve it, and the ferry continued to move towards Syria.
The ship had to make a short stop in Larnaka port, but it started to incline again right before entering the port. The crew tried to do their best for several days, but when the angle reaches 45 degrees, it became obvious that the ship was doomed. The crew decided to take it far to the sea in order not to block the bay for other ships. The ship was taken 1.5 kilometers away, and the crew left it.
Zenobia didn’t really want to get sunk. It took almost 4 days to fill it with water, and it disappeared on June 7, 1980.
